Overview of the network settings needed for Density Sensors
Density Sensors are designed to work on all common Enterprise network configurations while allowing easy and secure access and data transmission to our cloud services.
Connection Types
- 1 x Gigabit Ethernet 10/100/1000 (preferred)
- 1 x WiFi 2.4GHz (requires the Density Unit Setup App to locally set up the device)
- Note: Wireless should not be used for a deployment consisting of more than 10 density sensors, as this can lead to network congestion and a poor user experience
Power Requirements
- Entry: PoE+ 802.3at, 30W
- Open Area: PoE 802.3af, 15.4W
- Entry Long Range: PoE 802.3af, 15.4W
Unsupported Connection types:
- Network with captive portal
- Networks with SSL inspection
- 802.1x wired authentication
- 5GHz Wireless
- WPA2 Enterprise
- Hidden SSID (Note: Can be used if temporarily made visible during initial provisioning)
Switching
Density sensors are compatible with most enterprise-grade unmanaged switches that meet the above power and network requirements (30W per Entry and 15.4W per Open Area Sensor)
IP Configuration
Density sensors must be assigned an IPv4 address. Most commonly this is done via DHCP, although static IP addressing is also supported, via our Unit Setup mobile app. A DNS server must also be configured.
Network Bandwidth
Density sensors communicate with the Density cloud service and use an average of 1-3 Kbps / per Entry sensor, and 5-10 Kbps / per Open Area sensor. Please ensure the network being used is able to support this amount of traffic for the number of devices being installed.
Device Updates
Density sensor software is automatically maintained by Density using an OTA (over-the-air) software update system. Density will notify customers when a new update is available and will schedule, perform, and monitor sensor software updates for all online sensors.
Firewall
Density sensors need to be able to communicate with the following Density services. All communication from Density sensors is outbound, over HTTPS (port 443) unless otherwise specified below. Please whitelist the following services on your firewall:
- *.density.io (port 443*)
- *.amazonaws.com
- *.gstatic.com
An Internal DNS server is strongly recommended. If using Public DNS, please ensure the following are whitelisted (optional):
- 8.8.8.8
- 8.8.4.4
An internal NTP server is strongly recommended. For NTP and time synchronization, please ensure the following are whitelisted:
- *connman.net
- *.ntp.org (port 123)
Proxy Servers
Density supports proxy server connections. Upon request, Density Support will provide a certificate and private key, which can be used to configure sensor connections via web app or HTTP request.
WebSocket Communication
Our sensors utilize WebSocket connections for real-time communication with our cloud infrastructure, securely transmitting data over port 443 with TLS encryption.
Static Provisioning
There is no need for the Unit Setup app if you choose to use DHCP on ethernet. For static provisioning, there is no alternative - you must use the Unit Setup App provided. For more information on how to use the Unit Setup app, refer to this guide.
*Note: Sensors with an older OS may see traffic on Port 8443. Please reach out to support@density.io for further instructions.
